Welcome to our first lesson on how to build your own website using Wordpress, a popular content management system that can be used to create any type of website you desire. These lessons will take you step by step on how to set up an invironment for you to set up, build and test a Wordpress website. We are going to teach you the way we learned how to do it and not the way other people would think is the best way. We will teach you the way we (after many attempts) found to be the fastest and easiest way to do things. Please note this was done using a Windows machine. Instructions for Linux or Apple Mac will be similar, but the tools will be different. Please consult the necessary documentation to find out about the tools to use. Let's start
In order for you to buld your own Wordpress website you will need tools. These tools come in the form of various software programs. You are also going to need an Internet connection, which is only really neede to download the various tools you will need. Here is the list of tools you will need plus where you can download them. They are all free to download and use so no costs to worry about:
- WAMP - http://www.wampserver.com/en/
This is a web server installed on your local machine and it is used to host a website on a PC without the need of a hosting account or web server. There are various types available we just found WAMP to be the easiest to use and configure.
- FILEZILLA - https://filezilla-project.org/download.php
This is a FTP client and although not really necessary to have to build a website with, we include it here for when you are ready to upload your website to a hosting account or web server.
- SUBLIME TEXT - https://www.sublimetext.com/3
This is an editor or IDE and there are so many out there. We chose SUBLLIME TEXT because it is un-complicated, easy to use and it remembers commands. It can be used for a huge range of programming languages.
- 7-ZIP - http://www.7-zip.org/download.html
This is a file archiving tool that is used to zip and unzip files with. You will need it to unzip the archive you get from Wordpress.org
Once you have all the tools you need to download the latest copy of a Wordpress installation. Go to https://wordpress.org/ and click on the 'Download Wordpress' button in the top right corner.
